Join us in June and experience a life-changing visit to Africa, including a visit to South Africa and an incredible journey through Tanzania.
The Immersion Leader is Dr Casta Tungaraza, Chair of the African Education Society Inc, and President of the African Community in Western Australia.
Our local host is the current President of the Pan-African Parliament, the Honourable Gertrude Mongella. She is also a member of the Tanzanian National Parliament – representing the Ukerewe constituency – and Secretary-General of the United Nations’ Fourth World Conference on Women held in Beijing (1995). This amazing opportunity visiting Gertrude's home village on the island of Ukerewe in Lake Victoria and engaging in the life of the people of the island. The Immersion will provide you with a real insight into Tanzanian daily life, engagement with community, NGOs, history and culture, and a profound engagement with Tanzania’s natural beauty. Following 2 ½ weeks in Tanzania, participants will have two days in Johannesburg, engaging with the social justice story of South Africa, including a visit to Soweto.

Program and Prices
Day 1: Depart Perth; stay overnight in Johannesburg
Day 2: Arrive Dar-es-Salaam, Tanzania
Day 3: Saba Saba Day (Saba Saba means "seven seven" in Swahili). July 7 is a public holiday celebrating the birth of Tanganyika African National Union in 1954 – a political Party that lead Tanzania to Independence.
Day 4: Visit Dar-Es Salaam Museum, short history of Tanzania. Dinner – African buffet and dance performance
Day 5: Visit Bagamoyo, historical slave market
Day 6: African Education Society Project with Street Children
Day 7: Travel to Zanzibar
Day 8: Depart Zanzibar for Dar-es-Salaam
Day 9: Fly to Mwanza, connect to Ukerewe
Day 9 - 13: Ukerewe – Stay in hostel-style accommodation in Nansio, the ‘capital’ town of the island - participate in socio-economic and cultural activities
Day 10: A day tour to enjoy the island’s beauty: Visit significant sites and attractions on various Ukerewe islands
Day 11: Health, education and water projects
Day 12: Cultural activities of the people of the island
Day 13: Break into groups - exposure to different economic activities carried out on the islands
Day 14: Leave Mwanza for Arusha
Day 15/16: SJ activities in Arusha, plus ecotourism option to tour Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater
Day 17: Fly Arusha - Dar-es-Salaam
Day 18/19: Dar-es-Salaam activites, plus Immersion Reflection and Debrief
Day 20: Fly Dar-es-Salaam – Johannesburg
Day 21: Social justice visits in Johannesburg, including Soweto visit
Day 22: SJ activities in Johannesburg; depart for Perth 4pm
Day 23: Arrive Perth Sunday morning 7.40 am
Each day will have reflection and debrief time as part of the experiential learning process.

This price includes:
- International airfares and full travel insurance;
- Three nights accommodation and food in Johannesburg;
- Extensive domestic travel within Tanzania, including two plane rides, 4 ferry rides, and a two-day chartered bus trip through the Serengeti and (expensive) overnight stay within;
- Serengeti Park fees;
- Accommodation, food and safe drinking water; and
- A modest cash gift to the projects and communities we visit.
The price does NOT include your passport, visa and health precaution costs.
Subsidies and fundraising opportunities may be available to low-income applicants.
