Experience a life-changing journey to Timor Leste. The program includes some time in the capital Dili, visits to various places of significance in the recent history of Timor, and includes time staying in the villages outside of Dili. Here we will be hosted by local families, and live and work alongside the community to get a genuine insight into the lives of people in Timor Leste.

This program is a partnership between ERJ Aotearoa and the ERISJ, Fremantle. Your Immersion facilitators are Samuel Drumm from New Zealand, and Khristo Newall from Australia. Khristo has a background in community development, including urban Australian settings, remote Aboriginal communities, and some time in Iraq. Sam has lived and worked in Timor Leste, and brings a wealth of local knowledge from several visits to the country.

This immersion will provide you with a real insight into Timorese daily life, engagement with community, NGOs, history and culture, and a profound engagement with Timor’s natural beauty.  Download the general Immersion Programs Brochure (PDF 340.11Kb) or read more about the Objectives and Philosphy of Immersions.

Program overview:

After arrival in Dili and a day of orientation, we will be hosted by the Commission for Reception, Truth and Reconciliation, and visit local NGOs and projects.

From Dili the group will spend time in a community in the Ermera region, contributing to the work of the Bakhita Community Centre. Participants will then spend several days being hosted by families in and around the villages of Ralaiko. Here participants will live and work in the host communities, and get a real opportunity to build relationships and understand daily life for these people.

Each day will have reflection and debrief time as part of the experiential learning process.
