Fusing action and thought

Social justice and human rights are among the most important of all human and spiritual values. Our Institute seeks to promote action and thought that might generate better outcomes for entire societies, and for the least fortunate in particular.

What's distinctive about us?

We have identified two problems, not one.  Most social justice supporters realise how unjust things are. But there’s an additional problem alongside vast injustice: flawed responses. The upshot of these flaws is insufficient hope, insight, skills or resilience for the work of justice to succeed. We specialise in addressing these deficits.

Invitations to Social Justice: Examples

Immersions
We provide immersions in Broome, Perth, Timor-Leste, India and Tanzania. This opportunity to build relationships with those ‘doing it tough’ can be life-changing.

Social Justice Congresses and Weeks
Two-day Social Justice Congresses induct up to 60 people from a school, University, TAFE or workplace into social justice. Content is tailored to audience. Social Justice Weeks enable educational institutions and workplaces to host an ERISJ staff member for a week of SJ activities & education. We come to you, anywhere in Oceania.

Social Justice Major Public Events
We host various public events including Just Music: Perth’s Annual Concert for Social Justice each December to celebrate the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We hold an annual Defending Humanity: the Fine Arts and Social Justice seminar and exhibition. We organise two cutting-edge annual national conferences, In Conversation with Aboriginal Leaders and Church Understandings of Social Justice.

Volunteer and Internship Opportunities
We offer volunteer placements and internships with us. We tailor your work with us around your interests and skills. Training is provided.

Website Resources
We provide free SJ education and action-oriented website resources, variously suited to all levels of education. It includes 500 links to pertinent websites.

Skill Development for Social Justice Effectiveness:

The work of Social Justice (SJ) provides one of life’s most profound challenges and invitations. SJ education, training and research is our main focus, and is available to the entire community. Our offerings allow you to design your own program as to be equipped for the journey.

Our education and training has two target audiences, each casting a wide net. We provide opportunities for all members of the public to attend our events out of general interest, shared values or a desire for skill acquisition, inspiration or personal development. Our second target group shares such motivations and, additionally, seeks certification of their new skills. Thus our Certificates are offered in two streams: with and without assessment.

There are over 220 days per year available to individuals and institutions to customise their SJ education and training. Each day works both in its own right and in tandem with other days.

Modular delivery means that we simultaneously offer:

  • content that we invite Universities and TAFEs to accredit as if their own Units. (Two Universities already do so.);
  • Professional Development suitable for many occupations. A number of workplaces currently recognise our events as official PD for their employees, and many more have signalled an intention to do so. Some workplaces pay employee registration fees and provide paid time-off to attend our events; and
  • Over 20 ERISJ Certificates of Social Justice Competence. Each certificate credits a particular field of SJ experience and capacity, and requires attendance at 5 one-day Intensives or equivalent. We anticipate Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and Higher Education Institution accreditation of these Certificates shortly, including articulation arrangements with TAFEs and Universities.
Supporting Social Justice Work: Examples

Research and Advocacy
We ask hard questions about human dignity and wellbeing. Solid research is the precondition of our advocacy – and any right to urge social or policy change. Visit our Major Research Projects and public commentary pages for more information.

Our work with Aboriginal Australia includes:

  • Aboriginal Leadership Program

This includes Journey of Healing activities, Domestic Violence program, numerous 1-day Intensives, and leading a group of Aboriginal women to NZ to work with Maori women leaders;

  • Through our Immersions and advocacy, we invite non-Aboriginal persons to view the world through indigenous eyes; and
  • International Initiative for Indigenous Aspirations

This documents accomplishments within indigenous communities in Australia, NZ, Canada and the USA. The intention is to record success stories, identifying ‘what is working’. We will collect these resources to:

  1. disseminate ‘best practice’ developments between indigenous peoples;
  2. broaden the knowledge of policy actors of all races; and
  3. promote public understanding of positive parts of the journey of indigenous peoples.

This is not about a rose-coloured view of existing problems. Rather, it is to convey that the glass is half-full as well as half-empty.

Our Indigenous Affairs page offers more information on the scope of our work in this area.

Social Justice and Spirituality Retreat
This 5-day non-residential retreat seeks to develop inner life to support participants to find inner peace and stay the distance. Those who suffer need nothing less.  Visit our Events page for more information.
